Lately, Zendaya Coleman was announced to starr as Aaliyah for a lifetime movie. One of the sources of this news was Yahoo.
However, it seems that something has changed in the casting, particularly as to who will play the role of Aaliyah
a July 19 post of NYDailyNews said that Alexandra Shipp was announced as the movie's new star. Disney star Coleman posted a series of Instagram videos later the day that Shipp was announced as the new replacement to play as Aaliyah and she also clarified why she left the project.
The exact statement from Zendaya:
"Let me just explain something. The reason why I chose not to do the Aaliyah movie had nothing to do with the haters or the people telling me I couldn't do it, I wasn't talented enough, or I wasn't black enough," she said, referring to the backlash she received upon being cast in the role.
"The main reasons were the production value wasn't there, there were complications with the music rights, and I just felt like it wasn't being handled delicately considering the situation," she continued. "And I tried my best to reach out to the family on my own, and I wrote a letter, but I was unable to do so therefore I felt not really morally okay with moving forward with the project."
The young Disney darling is referring to Aaliyah's relatives on the statment above.
It was reported that Aaliyah's relative have publicly stated they are not happy about the Lifetime movie and they told Daily News last month that they did not support the project because they believe the late singer deserves a more high-profile film and a star to play "the scale and scope of her life."
After Zendaya gave her reasons why she left the project, she congratulated Shipp on getting the role.
