Rory McIlroy improved greatly in the rankings after he jumped from 8th place to 2nd place. His recent win in the 2014 British Open is a big factor which contributed to his promotion in the charts.
However, McIlroy has been the number one for four occasions within 39 weeks, but he lost it to Tiger Woods in March 2013.
His top competitor at the British Open, Sergio Garcia, is at the 5th place. But he was in the ninth place in the previous rankings. There are no American players in the world's top five, but Fowler improved from 25th to 18th.
Bubba Watson, the Masters champion, is the best American player according to the world rankings, where he garners the 6th place.
Consequently, Tiger Woods is now at the ninth place, from his original seventh, after he finished 69th at the British Open in the Royal Liverpool this week. His loss there in the Hoylake is his career's worst 72-hole tournament in a major as a professional golf player.
It is very likely that Rory McIlroy can top the charts again in his following tournaments.
