"Sons of Anarchy" star Charlie Hunnam explained his decision to back out from "Fifty Shades of Grey," while he also weighed in on Jaimie Dornan and the criticisms hurled against the movie adaptation of E.L. James' best-selling series.
The "Sons of Anarchy" star explained to US Weekly that schedule conflicts forced him to give up the "50 Shades of Grey" role as he has already committed to other projects, such as playing Jax in the series, and "Crimson Peak" with Guillermor del Toro even before he was offered the BDSM lead.
"It became like an embarrassment of riches. I had so much going on, and I was already committed to doing Guillermo's film..." he said.
"I don't think people have had unchaperoned access to me since all of this went on. The CliffsNotes were exactly what we said. I couldn't do it because of [the] schedule. It was as simple as that," the Daily Mail quoted the 34-year-old star.
"Sons of Anarchy" Charlie Hunnam was chosen in September last year to take the lead part of Christian Grey, a fictional character in E.L. James' BDSM book Fifty Shades of Grey, who falls in love with a college graduate Anastasia Steele (to be played by Dakota Johnson) and shares with her his BDSM lifestyle and tons of life baggage. However, Hunnam had to announce a month after that he is backing out of the film due to projects already lined up.
Charlie Hunnam expressed confidence on Jamie Dornan's portrayal of the masochist billionaire character, though, saying Dornan is "probably a lot better looking and a lot smoother" than he is.
"I would've brought a certain rugged charm to it, but believe me, he's going to do just fine," Hunnam told US Weekly.
Hunnam also took the chance to defend 50 Shades of Grey author E.L. James, against those who says that what James wrote was a "mommy porn" book.
"What she actually created is a really sophisticated dynamic, and [she] presented it in a package which was accessible to people who normally would be terrified of that subject...Actually, what she did was pretty brilliant."
Fans need not to worry, though, Charlie Hunnam will see the "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie once it premiere on Valentine's Day next year.
