Chael Sonnen arrived to face the Nevada Athletic Commission last evidence in relation to him failing two consecutive drug tests. Sonnen did not offer any evidence to his defense. It was due to this that the board sanctioned him to a two year suspension.
Sonnen tested positive for Clomiphene, Anastrozole, HCG, HGH and EPO in separate tests, given on May 24 and June 5. He was also made to pay the costs of the tests.
But what caught everybody's attention was the five members of the commission who seemed to be conflicted on their decision.
One of the commissioners involved is Anthony Marnell. At first, Marnell wanted a lifetime ban for the fighter but there was also a time that he saw Sonnen as a friend.
Aside from Marnell, Brady, Pat Lundvall and Skip Avansino has kept on asking Sonnen to help them catch other fighters who cheat.
Sonnen did not talk to media after the meeting and talk less during the hearing. What he emphasized was that "I am guilty. I am ashamed and it's why I'm not putting up a defense. "I have a goal to come as clean as I can as quickly as I can."
Sonnen was lauded by the Commissioners for his effort but the deputy attorney general Christopher Eccles was quick to point out saying "You don't get to stop using one prohibited drug [TRT] and start using five prohibited drugs."
He added "These are five drugs that are prohibited at all times. From the state's point of view, it is not that difficult to determine what is approved and what isn't approved. It's not approved. That's the default. It's not approved. If you have concerns about something, call the commission and we'll tell you."
For Eccles "Mr. Sonnen, this is brazen, outrageous cheating. We're talking about high doses of EPO. We're talking about high doses of HGH. How did he get it into his system? Look at the exhibits that are in evidence. He was injecting himself. You've got to be kidding me that somebody doesn't know that you're sticking a needle in your arm with EPO and HGH and you don't know that it's prohibited. By his own admission, he says he graduated [college] with honors. I can't believe that that's 100 percent truthful that that guy can't figure that out."
