After finding out that Rashard Lewis needs a knee surgery, Dallas Mavericks voided his one-year contract paying the veteran's minimum. It was last Tuesday when Colin Bryant, Lewis' agent, announced that the power need a knee surgery on his right leg after finding out during a physical test for Lewis' entrance to Mavericks. According to Bryant" Rashard discovered he needs a medical procedure on his right knee to ensure he functions at a high level this season. We look forward to [Lewis] getting this behind him as soon as possible so he can continue his stellar NBA career."
Although the Dallas Mavericks did not directly gave any comments with regards to the issue, Mavericks president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson spoke through a statement with regards to this concern saying "It came to our attention during Rashard Lewis' physical that he is in need of a medical procedure on his right knee. We wish him all the best for a speedy recovery and continued success in his remarkable career."
Lewis' agent has already implied that the Mavericks will keep his client, but if they can still invalidate the contract, the window won't be open much longer. It seems like Mavericks needed to think on how to work around the situation before giving their decision.
Lewis plays as a forward in the NBA's. He started his NBA career in 1998. Lewis bypassed college and opted for the 1998 NBA Draft, wherein he was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics with the third pick of the second round (32nd overall). At the time of his selection, he was the last player remaining in the "green room", where fifteen of the top draft prospects sit until their selection.
He stayed with Seattle for nine seasons before jumping ship to the Orlando Magic where he was signed with a six-year sign-and-trade deal worth $118 million. But he was traded to the Washington Wizards in 2010 after staying for four seasons with team. He stayed with the Wizards for two years before moving to the Miami Heat.
The 16-year NBA veteran averaged 4.5 points and 1.8 rebounds in 16.2 minutes per game last season.
