Fans were overcome with excitement, and were on their feet applauding when the Dark Knight director made a surprise appearance at Comic-con 2014. Christopher Nolan came in near the end of Paramount Pictures' session at Hall H, to promote his soon-to-be-released science fiction move Interstellar.

"We're trying to show the biggest imaginable phenomenon that exists in the universe," the director said of his movie, which stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and Michael Caine.

It was the first time the director visited the popular convention, which was this year held in San Diego. "I thought I'd see what the fuss was about," Nolan said. As expected, the director of the Batman franchise, and the cult-favorite 2000 film, Memento.

Much about the Interstellar plot is shrouded in mystery. Even the Interstellar movie trailer released earlier, did not say much apart from the fact that it seems to involve time travel and worm holes.

Nolan was expectedly still mum about Interstellar during the panel discussion, but he did open up about how the movie came about, and what his influences were in creating his newest film. And one of the inspirations for the film was the era that the director grow up in.

He said that he grew up in a time "where being an astronaut was the highest ambition. And the idea that we could keep exploring further and further. I felt that has fallen off greatly over the last few decades."

The technology for the movie itself are reportedly cutting edge. But all of it was to serve the purpose of making the film more real. "I'm not going to tell you what [the technology we used is] because I want you to see the film," Nolan said.

Aside from the director, the Interstellar movie lead actor Matthew McConaughey also stepped to the stage earlier to talk about his role in this exciting new movie. The actor received a similarly raucous welcome, and he revealed the process of creating the movie. "We moved fast. Two, three takes and we moved on. It felt very much like a big independent film," McConaughey share. "[This movie] is by far the most ambitious film Mr. Nolan has directed."

But perhaps the biggest highlight of the panel, was the unveiling of a brand new Interstellar movie trailer. It was unveiled exclusively for the fortunate Comic-con 2014 attendees. But the clip will reportedly be not available online for several more weeks. We'll just have to sit tight and wait.
