A teenager from India has set a world record after 232 teeth were removed from his mouth through surgery.

Ashik Gavai, 17, suffered from a rare condition called complex odontoma which means he had tumors growing under his gums. As such, the tumors resulted in tooth-like growths inside his mouth, which are commonly called denticles.

Gavai's dental surgeon, Dr. Vandana Thoravade confirmed the teenager's successful operation but expressed disbelief over the number of denticles found in the boy's mouth, according to CTV News.

"We are very happy, while operating, we were removing one after another denticles and passing on to the medical staff to keep, but when surgery was over and when we spread the denticles and started counting... while doing the surgery we were unaware that there were so many, so many, so many denticles," Thoravade said.

Thoravade also confirmed that Gavai's surgery lasted for approximately seven hours, Yahoo News reported.

"We operated on Monday and it took us almost seven hours. We thought it may be a simple surgery but once we opened it there were multiple pearl-like teeth inside the jaw bone," the physician said.

Suresh Gavai, the teenager's father, told the Mumbai Mirror newspaper that he and his family members were most concerned that Ashik's swelling may have been cancerous.

"I was worried that it may turn out to be cancer so I brought him to Mumbai."

Sunanda Dhiware-Palwankar, head of dentistry told CNN, "It is very common for a person to have a smalI number of abnormal teeth, but this many is very rare. I think it could be a world record."

Dhiware-Palwankar confirmed previous instances wherein 40 to 50 denticles were removed from a single patient.

As of late, Ashik is already recovering from the surgery and the structure of his jawbone was maintained throughout the operation to ensure it would heal without any deformities and complications, Yahoo noted.
