The movie has racked a remarkable $44M during its opening on Friday. The figure proves to be a feat for director Luc Besson as it has already surpassed his $40M production budget.
Not to mention, Scarlett Johansson's hot new flick has also toppled Dwayne Johnson's "Hercules" who only managed to make $29M this weekend.
Despite the notable numbers, movie critics are not exactly blown away by "Lucy." The movie was given a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has received quite harsh comments from top critics.
Wesley Morris, Grantland:
"This movie worries that humanity is wasting its potential, which is a bizarre fear for a movie that has this many nonsensical shootouts. But that's what on Besson's mind: the Big Bang and bang-bang."
Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times:
"Part philosophical/scientific treatise, part action movie, a film that goes from mayhem to boredom in a heartbeat."
Christopher Orr, The Atlantic
"Besson has made very, very bad films in the past, but this is the first time he has presented one so idiotic that the only way to properly convey its flaws is to enumerate them."
Here is a short synopsis of the movie as published on IMDb:
"Set in a world dominated by crime and corruption, Lucy, a woman living in Taiwan, is forced to work as a drug mule for the mob. The drug she inadvertently takes leaks into her system, changing her into a superhuman. She can absorb knowledge instantaneously, is able to move objects with her mind and has become impervious to pain."
