Running Benefits; 5-10 Minute Run Can Increase Life Expectancy

The benefits of running are endless.

A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology suggests that running even for a few minutes a day can reduce the risk of dying from heart disease, according to CNN.

Researchers reportedly studied more than 55,000 adults between the ages of 18 and 100 over a 15-year period, looking at their overall health, whether they ran and how long they lived.

Those who ran had a 30% lower risk of death from all causes and a 45% lower risk of death form cardiovascular disease compared to nonrunners, investigators found.

Researchers found that runners on average lived three years longer than those who didn't. Even when data was broken down by age, sex, body mass index, and smoking and alcohol use, the benefits of running were still the same, according to the news outlet.

"That's important to note. Even with all the negative factors, such as obesity, smoking and diabetes, those who were, let's say, obese and ran had a less likely chance of dying from heart problems than those obese people who didn't run. Same with smokers, diabetics, etc," stated Dr. Warren Levy, a cardiologist and chief medical officer of Virginia Heart in northern Virginia.

Although the benefits of running are beyond wonderful, too much running might be bad for you.

"With too much of vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise, there might be a side effect. Is there any limit that we shouldn't go over? It is possible that people who do too much might be harming their health," stated Duck-chul "D.C." Lee, an assistant professor of kinesiology at Iowa State, according to Medical News Today.
