Scarlett Johansson's "Lucy" rocked the movie blockbuster charts so hard on its first weekend, raking in $44 million that it effortlessly hurled "Hercules" to the second spot. Once again, brainpower (maximum use at 100%) proves to be far more powerful than muscle prowess (even at unnatural god-like levels) - as proven in terms of overall ticket sales, that is.
According to Entertainment Weekly, "Hercules", whose title role Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson portrayed, lagged behind Scarlett Johansson "Lucy" with $29 million on its first weekend.
Entertainment Weekly reported that moviegoers flocked to the 3,173 cinemas in huge throngs to view Scarlett Johansson's 'Lucy' when it opened last July 25. The movie was originally expected to be successful. However, to the sheer delight of Luc Besson, the sci-fi action movie's creator, and the rest of his team, ticket sales went through the roof, thus exceeding expectations.
For Besson, this is the first time his movie made so much on its opening weekend. Scarlett Johansson, on the other hand, is no stranger to blockbuster hits. Her portrayal of the role of a superwoman in everyday clothes but with rapidly escalating mental abilities, further increases her value as an actress. The movie has catapulted her already glowing career into even more stellar heights.
Prior to the movie's opening, Besson assaulted the viewers' senses with fun but weird trailers, reported JoBlo. However, the level of enjoyment and oddity featured therein were nothing compared to what they saw when they viewed its entirety.
JoBlo shared that Besson admitted he took inspiration from three movies in creating his action film: 'Inception,' 'Leon: The Professional' and '2001: A Space Odyssey.' Each movie in Bessons' unexpected trio of influences is unique in its own right. From each, Besson drew influence in creating a specific aspect or portion of 'Lucy.'
The Professional' inspired him to come up with great ideas for the action sequences. As for the complicated characteristic of the plot, 'Inception' was his source of inspiration. Finally, for the other-worldly aspect of the movie, which already borders on the spiritual, he was influenced by '2001: A Space Odyssey.'
