Australian Sally Pearson successfully defended her crown as she finished the 100m hurdle with great finesse. Pearson entered the Commonwealth Games under a new coach as Australian team head coach Eric Hollingsworth was suspended after he criticized her for setting a bad example to her juniors after missing a pre-games training.
According to Pearson "It is sad because I guess I was probably the last supporter that he had on the Australian team and he messed that up himself by really - again, I am not sure of the word to use - but I felt really put down and he spoke down to me very harshly. I thought at the time and I am the sort of person that if you are going to treat me like that you're not going to get much respect after it"
Pearson said that she got it light with regards to Hollingsworth critism. She said that she has heard far worst saying "My case was so less severe than anyone else's on the team - there are so many stories and I am not going to name any names but everyone has copped a lot of crap and I am so glad that I really didn't have to lift a finger to get him off the team."
Pearson, who is an Olympic medalist, finished the race in 12.67 sec. She was seconded by England's US-born Tiffany Porter who clocked in at 12.80 sec then followed by Canada's Angela Whyte for the third place at 13.02 sec.
Pearson talking about Hollingsworth being on the team said "He lost his job for what he said in the papers trying to justify himself. But I only did this for myself and the people who are supporting me."
She added "This medal means so much. It has been a really hard year having been injured and going into the World Championships with a new coach. But I knew tougher people than me have got through this and come out the other side. For me it was about focusing on what I could control both beforehand and in the race and I came out the victor."
