Folk duo The Civil Wars officially announced their break up today.
Joy Williams and John Paul White of the group had been on hiatus since 2012, when they canceled a European fall tour, citing "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition," according to the Rolling Stone.
"I am very saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least. JP is a tremendous musician, and I will always be grateful for the music we were able to create together," stated Williams in a statement.
Former The Civil Wars member John Paul White thanked the ongoing support of his fans in lieu of the break up. The duo also released a digital download version of "You Are My Sunshine" as a parting gift for fans, according to People.
"I would like to express sincere thanks to all who were a part of the arc of The Civil Wars - from the beginning, to the end, and all points in between. My deep appreciation goes out to all who supported, disseminated, and enjoyed the music. Whatever shape or form the next chapter takes, thanks for being a large part of this one," stated White, according to Billboard.
The Civil Wars have continued to impress with their music, winning four Grammys in the course of their career. Their track "Safe and Sound," which they collaborated on with Taylor Swift, appeared on 2011's "The Hunger Games: Songs from District 12 and Beyond."
Despite news of the duo's break up, there is hope that fans will still be able to experience music from the at least one member of the folk sensation.
"Looking ahead, I'm excited to share the music that I am writing and recording in the midst of this difficult transition. I've loved being back in the studio, and have missed performing live. I look forward to seeing you soon," explained Joy Williams in her statement.
