Jason Statham nearly dies during a stunt in "The Expendables 3."

Jason Statham nearly dies while filming a scene in "The Expendables 3," driving a truck 60 feet into an icy river. The actor relied on his deep-diving skills and survived.

Statham was driving a truck as part of a stunt in a scene when the brakes failed, forcing him to run the truck over and into a sixty-foot drop into icy waters.

His co-star Sylvester Stallone related the incident in an interview with The Mirror. "He faced death. He was test-driving a three-tonne truck and the brakes ran out. It went down 60ft into the Black Sea and became impaled. Luckily we had taken the doors off before. If anyone else had been in that truck we would have been dead because we were all wearing heavy boots and gun belts."

Jason Statham nearly dies in the accident, and only his previous experience as a deep diver also saved him from potential death. He was a professional diver before his breakout stint in 1998's "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels," representing England in the 1990 Commonwealth Games.

Injuries come with the course of "The Expendable 3" production. Sylvester Stallone also suffered an accident which forced him to have a metal plate inserted on his back.

Stallone expected there's a price to pay for the stunts, in his comment. "I usually grade the quality of the film by the intensity of the injury. In this one I ended up really taking a fall on my back and ended up having some metal inserted in there so if I'm squeaky then it's not my shoes, it's my back!" (independent.co.uk)

Statham himself downplayed the details of the accident, and when asked about the worst he suffered during filming, replied: "I snapped a shoelace in the very first scene," even though there have been a few other incidents where Jason Statham nearly dies doing stunts.
