"House of Cards" season 3 spoilers hinted of Frank Underwood struggling to find his purpose now that he's at the White House, and also alone as his loyal aide Doug Stamper might not come back.
Creator Beau Willimon talked "House of Cards" season 3 spoilers to Katie Couric for The Aspen Institute as he weighed in on the fate of Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey).
Katey Couric asked the showrunner about the future for both Frank and Claire Underwood (Robin Wright since, "their whole lives have been kind of focused on this ultimate power grab, now that they have achieved it, is it challenging how to keep things interesting?"
"Look it's challenging, but not to keep things interesting, that precise question is the crux of moving forward, when your entire identity is directional it's all very clear, and it makes sense." he said. "When you've achieved your destination, once you get there what do you do with that achievement ... I'm not going to tell you what they're going to do."
He said for Frank Underwood, if getting there was the purpose, then he has achieved meaning for his existence.
"That is a meaning in itself, the struggle, the journey, but once yo u win ... It's like that great final moment in "The Candidate" where Robert Redford was in the broom closet avoiding his own victory party and his campaign manager comes in, and 'come on, you've got to get out here, you've won.' 'yeah, but now what?' That plays more for comedy or satire but it's a good question for the Underwoods," Willimon added.
