German midfielder Ikay Gundongan has finally admitted that it was tough watching his team, Germany, winning the World Cup, while he only watched from the sides because of his injury.
He also said that he will discuss another contract with Dortmund after his recovery.
He had been injured because of a back injury from a friendly match between Germany and Paraguay last August of 2013.
"On one hand, it was incredible for those guys. On the other, it was personally bad situation. You know what you could possibly have been doing, possibly been called a world champion," he told Bild.
"In such stupid ways are dreams shattered. Dreams you had as a child are broken - at least, for now."
However, he is just 23 of the moment, so there is no doubt that he will be able to finally play in the World Cup in Russia or in Qatar in 2018 and 2022, respectively.
"It would be irresponsible to mention a date. Of course I am eager to get back into training. After the operation, we said I hoped to be back playing again in the autumn," he continued.
He admitted though that he wanted to return just in time for the Bundesliga Cup, but he still is not sure. Nevertheless, he continues to train lightly in preparation for the next season.
"I haven't thought about a break in my career. Of course, I wondered if I would ever get back to the form I was in."
"The [previous] contract was only for a year and a half. BVB wanted certainty, so as soon as I'm fit and well, we will sit down and talk about another extension and the future," he added.
Gundongan is a midfielder who scored in the Champions League finals last season, 2013. His last contract was an extension with Dortmund last April 2014.
