Smartphone market growth is driven by its strong market demand.
According to the preliminary data shown in the Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report of the International Data Corporation (IDC), it increased by 23.1% by the second quarter of 2014, thereby posting a new record of 295.3 million of shipments in one quarter. IDC Program Director Ryan Reith stated in the IDC press release that this only demonstrated "plenty of opportunity and momentum" for the smartphone market.
Samsung and even Apple may find this particular quarter challenging, but still, the demand brought considerable results to smartphone vendors. Local vendors, as well as the developing markets, are the two primary reasons for this development. Huawei is undoubtedly the most notable among the top merchants as it almost doubled its shipments from last year. Lenovo came in second.
In spite of the criticisms received by Galaxy S5, smartphone market growth saw Samsung shipped millions of this unit from April to June 2014. S4 and S3 continued to be strong as they have become better alternatives due to their affordability. Second quarter is a typical seasonal low for Apple but it is even more this year because smartphone users await iPhone 6 with its bigger screen. The timing of its launch will dictate the fate of Apple in the third quarter.
Huawei's luck was on 4G LTE. It is looking forward to extending its reach in the international market and the results of the second quarter (with 95.1% growth from 2013) reflect the momentum. Lenovo, on the other hand, is enjoying its success from A788T AND 3G A388T, with 15.8 million shipments. The company continues to gain attention in the global market as its second quarter sales this year almost triplicated. LG's feat, on the other hand, was due to its L series. Smartphone market growth for LG is likely at the next quarter with the launch of G3 in Korea.
