Active Facebook users must have noticed the advertisement asking them if they want to change the color of their profile page. This is actually one of the oldest scams that target Facebook users.
If the link provided will be clicked, it can install a malware on your computer, and eventually spread the same to other computers connected in the network.
Some users showed interest in changing the color of their profile page, but unfortunately Facebook has always been blue. Facebook is not like Twitter in which you can change the theme of your background.
The scam allows users to pick from nine different colors. However, Cheetah Mobile, a Chinese Internet security company said this results to downloading of malicious software that can compromise the security of the computer and the network.
According to Cheetah, viruses and malware can be easily spread in Facebook given the number of users it has. Facebook has also been tagged as vulnerable to phishing sites. Users tend to click the links they see on the newsfeed.
"Cheetah Mobile researchers have found this issue to be happing due to a vulnerability that lives in Facebook's app page itself, allowing hackers to implant viruses and malicious code into Facebook-based applications [which] directs users to phishing sites," Cheetah said in one official blog post.
Data shows that at least 10,000 people have been victimized by this scam.
Researchers estimate that the scam has already impacted more than 10,000 people in multiple countries.
The said change color app entices Facebook users through a tutorial video. However, this only allows the attackers to access the users' friend list, photos and even personal messages. Some users may get a message offering free anti-virus software, but this can actually be malicious software.
The next time you click a link on Facebook, make sure to make the necessary research first. Otherwise, you might compromise your privacy and end up getting scammed.
