"Girls" star Zosia Mamet spoke about her eating disorder, for the first time ever, on her column on Glamour Magazine's September issue.
Mamet revealed that she's suffered an eating disorder for most of her life, but no one knew about it because she kept it private, according to People Magazine.
"This struggle has been mostly a private one, a war nobody knew was raging inside me. I tried to fight it alone for a long time. And I nearly died," she shared.
The actress shared that her eating disorder started at the age of eight, when someone told her, for the first time ever, that she was fat.
"I'm not fat; I've never been fat. But ever since then, there has been a monster in my brain that tells me I am - that convinces me my clothes don't fit or that I've eaten too much. At times it has forced me to starve myself, to run extra miles, to abuse my body."
The 26-year-old claimed that pressure from society played a huge part in her disorder, SMH noted.
"Our culture delivers a real one-two punch: You want to control something, and then society says, 'Hey, how about controlling the way you look? Skinny is beautiful. It's no secret that we live in a country with a warped view of beauty."
Mamet eventually sought treatment, after her father encouraged her too, but even that did not come easy for the actress.
After leaving the hospital, Mamet immediately succumbed to her eating disorder and once again lost all the weight she gained throughout that period.
Luckily, at present, Mamet claimed that she's already reached a healthy weight and considers herself as someone who will continue to recover for the rest of her life.
"I realize that my obsession wil always be with me. Let's diminish the stigma. Let's remind one another that we're beautiful," she concluded her article for the publication.
