"Kick-Ass 3" is still "up in the air," according to the creator of the Kick-Ass comic book series, Mark Millar.
The 2010 first movie take on the comic book, "Kick-Ass," was directed by Matthew Vaughn. It starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the unlikely superhero clad in green and Chloe Grace Moretz as the fierce Hit-Girl. Surprisingly, albeit some negative critique, "Kick-Ass" was a hit flick. In fact, it brought in almost $100 million at the box office, which is an amazing number, given that the movie only had a $28 million budget. Additionally, according to Millar, it had $140 million from DVD sales.
A sequel to the flick, however, 2013's "Kick-Ass 2," was not able to impress its fan base as much as its predecessor did. It did not reach the same high level that the first film did, despite amazing cast additions, such as Jim Carrey and director Jeff Wadlow from "Never Back Down." The un-success of the 2nd film could be a strong factor on the hold up with regards to "Kick-Ass 3," as Millar patiently explained to Comic Book Resources.
Millar said, "The second one didn't make as much. It cost a little less at around $24 million, made $61 million and made about $100 million again on DVD and TV rights. It was still profitable. It was, by no means, 'The Lone Ranger." But, does that mean we'll make another one again? I don't know. It's definitely up in the air, and we'll just have to see. I speak to Matthew every day, and we haven't discussed 'Kick-Ass 3.' So, who knows? The option is always open."
The second film was actually surrounded by controversy as it made its release to the public. This could be a huge factor why "Kick-Ass 3" is still questionable. Carrey was not shy at all in making his public statements about the violence shown in the film. Carrey has always been recognized for being in line with his anti-gun stance, and "Kick-Ass 2" did not stop him from speaking his mind.
