Lebron James dropped sugar and carbs from his diet in order to shed off some pounds. Book author and Ohio professor Dr. Jeff Volek shared diet secrets and how the new Cleveland Cavaliers forward can enhance his performance on the court.

Lebron James shared on Instagram a photo of him showing noticeably thinner. He also captioned the photo: "@myfabolouslife and I last night flexin something light weight. Akron to Brooklyn! It's all love and respect more importantly! #StriveForGreatness."

According to Dr. Jeff Volek, author of "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Performance," the decision of Lebron James to drop sugar and carbs from his diet is only logical.

"There is a growing number of athletes who have been told that they need carbs and now you see them questioning that conventional wisdom. It does take at least four weeks to adapt to the diet but almost anyone can do it and it's something they can maintain through competition," he said.

He said that a low-carb diet will have "benefits related to recovery and even cognition and mental clarity-the brain is very efficient at using ketones as a stable fuel source."

Dr. Cate Shanahan, the nutritionist of the Los Angeles Lakers, explained further the benefits when Lebron James dropped sugar and carbs from his diet.

"The term 'low-carb diet' should really be substituted with the term 'low sugar diet. In order for carbs to absorb into the blood stream, they turn into glucose-whole grain or not it's going to go in as sugar," she said, per SportsIllustrated.

Sekou Smith, NBA.com's resident Hang Time blogger, said that Lebron James dropping sugar and carbs from his diet will translate to good things on the court.

"LeBron being lighter on his feet will undoubtedly be better for the Cavaliers, who are set to add Kevin Love as a stretch power forward, which will eliminate the need for a bulked up LeBron who would have to split his time between the perimeter and the post," he wrote.
