Destiny Gameplay Xbox One Multiplayer: Destiny is slated for release on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360 in September 9. However, there will not be any new generation players hitting Destiny with their old generation friends.

It turns out that Bungie's sci-fi online shooter is not enabled for cross-platform multiplayer. This is not the first time for Microsoft and Sony, but Destiny cannot be played by PlayStation 4 gamers who want to shoot online with PlayStation 3 gamers.

Bungie's engineer Roger Wolfson noted that sealing off new generation from last generation players was implemented due to gameplay reasons and not for a technical issue: "I'll speak for the hypothetical player...[On PS3], I have a disadvantage sniping across the map because [my opponent with a new-gen console] is only two pixels on my screen, and I'm four pixels on his. You see that in the world of PC gaming, where people are always racing to the best video card to give themselves the advantage."

Cross-platform multiplayer gaming is not possible on Destiny because of the difference in resolution between Destiny versions. For instance, PS4 and Xbox shooters hit 1080p high definition, equivalent to 1080 horizontal lines per frame. Meanwhile on Xbox 360 and PS3, Destiny will run on 720p.

he mismatch in resolution does not equal to a PS3 disadvantage in comparison to a PS4 gamer: Bungie's Wolfson reiterated, "Regardless of what the reality is, there's definitely a perception among gamers that better hardware means you have an advantage'" adding "We don't want to have to enter that fray, so to create the best, most-level playing field, both actually and perceptually, we separated it by platform."
