Pope Francis Visit To South Korea: North Korea Fires Three Short-Range Rockets Before The Pope’s Arrival; His Holiness Calls For Peace And Unity, Using The English Language In His Speech

Pope Francis' visit to South Korea will take five days. His first trip to Asia as the Holy Father reflects the objective of the Vatican to develop Catholic faith in a country where only 10% of the population is Catholic.

For the first time, His Holiness delivered his speech in English to the surprise of everyone. The Pope's native language is Spanish but he knows how to speak in other languages, such Italian, French, Portuguese, and German. But as stated in a news release for the Papal Visit, he made an effort to study English (again) to connect better with English-speaking Asians without using a translator. He first studied the language three-decade ago but it did not turn out fine.

Even before the pontiff set foot in Seoul, North Korea fired three short-range rockets, as told by the Defense Ministry of South Korea. At 1 p.m., North Korea fired two more. The Defense Ministry was quick to say, however, that it did not pose threat to the pope's plane.

His 10-minutes speech, as reported by CBS New York, is highlighted by his call for peace and unity between South and North Korea, and for the prevention of "fruitless" criticisms and show of force. "We cannot become discouraged in our pursuit of these goals which are for the good not only of the Korean people but of the entire region and the whole world," he said.

But more than his speech, he fascinated the crowd when he rode a small Kia car. "It was just funny how he climbed into a tiny car like a cat going for a small cozy space. It's humbling and at the same time respectful. The Korean Protestant priests at mega-churches ride Mercedes Benz," told journalism student Kim Ji-hwan to ABC News.

Part of the itinerary of Pope Francis' visit to Korea is meeting with children, people with disabilities, immigrants, and officials of South Korea.
