"Outlander" TV series is set to have its second season just one week after its launch.

According to Deadline, Starz, the Outlander TV series home network, has signed up a deal for the show's second season from Sony Pictures and its creator and producer Ronald D. Moore.

Fans who found themselves hooked to the on-goings of the time-traveling drama will be looking forward to 13 episodes in the "Outlander" second season, which is three seasons less than the 16-episodes comprising the first season. All of them will be based on the events in Diana Gabaldon's second "Outlander" book.

The news of "Outlander" second season this early should not come as a surprise. Based on the report of Scotland Now, the first season episodes of the Outlander TV series have already earned a 95% viewer satisfaction rating in Scotland.

Deadline further corroborates the show's popularity by reporting that the show's premiere episode has drawn 5 million viewers. On top of that, it topped the Nielsen Twitter rankings for all the shows debuting on that day.

These facts are the exact reasons that led to the "Outlander" second season as announced by Starz. CEO Chris Albrecht Moore and the show's creator Jim Kohlberg said that the favorable response coming from fans made it easy for them to decide on continuing with the second book via the upcoming second season.

According to Scotland Now, the time-travel romance was filmed in various locations in Scotland: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife, Perthshire and West Lothian.

The show is based on the "Outlander" book series penned by Diana Gabaldon, which is comprised of eight books. The bestselling books have sold over 20 million copies and came out six times on the New York Times bestseller list. The plot revolves around the romance and adventure of Claire Randall, a married nurse during the Second World War in 1945 who travelled back to 1743 Scotland, reported Monsters and Critics.
