Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini expressed his delight and paid the players of his side compliments for their 2-0 victory over Newcastle United.
As they were put under pressure, City was made to work hard. Nevertheless, they were able to score two goals care of David Silva and Sergio Aguero.
Pelligrini was more than happy to start the new campaign with a shining victory and figured out that the attitude of his players are also important factors for their success.
"It was important to start with a win," he told Sky Sports.
"I think the players were both hungry and humble. We need both those things if we are going to continue winning titles and if we want to improve on what we did last year.
"It was so important to me that the players had that attitude from the beginning to the end of the game."
Pellegrini believes that his players have more to give and right now they are not in their full speed given that many of them are returning late to training after the World Cup. He however commended the players for being firm and keen to the Premier League season.
He added: "We were very solid at the back and Joe Hart didn't have any problems and in the second half it was normal that we were starting to get tired.
"The players are not able to play 90 minutes at the moment but we continued with our attitude and scored the second goal."
