Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly had received some good news. Kelly has been battling with cancer and three months after the he completed radiation and chemotherapy treatments, physical test shows that there is no evidence of sinus cancer.
According to Dr. Peter Costantino said in a release issued by New York City's Lenox Hill Hospital, he said "The treatments have so far completely eliminated Mr. Kelly's pain, and his level of function has essentially returned to normal. Further, on physical examination, there is no evidence of the cancer."
Kelly played for the Buffalo Bills as a quarterback during his NFL career. He was the third quarterback taken in the 1983 NFL Draft which featured six quarterbacks.
Kelly led the Bills to four consecutive Super Bowls, from 1991 to 1994; however, each time the team lost. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002 in his first year of eligibility and in 2009 he was elected to the Buffalo Bills' 50th Season All-Time Team. He has played for the Buffalo Bills for ten years from 1986 to 1996.
Kelly went to the hospital last Tuesday for a follow-up examination. But Constantin said that Kelly would still have to undergo a series of test first to determine if further treatment is in need.
He said "It is possible that no further treatment will be required."
Jill Kelly, Jim's wife, was happy of the good news. It can be remembered that Jim underwent surgery last June 2013 to remove cancerous cells under his jaw but the cancer then spread to his sinus in March.
Jill said "We have come away from our checkup visit in NYC encouraged and hopeful."
Kelly has been a top supporter of the Bills. His first public appearance right after undergoing treatment was during a surprise visit at the final minicamp practices in June.
He also appeared much stronger during the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Canton, Ohio which happened three weeks ago. He was joined by former Bills teammate, receiver Andre Reed.
Then, a day after, Kelly served as the Bills honorary captain before their preseason-opening game against the New York Giants.
