Brian Hoyer came out the winner in a battle for quarterback supremacy under the Cleveland Browns.
Hoyer worked very hard just to keep his position with the team. He just came off from a serious knee injury and when he got back, he was faced with a adversity in his quarterback career under the strong physique of young Johnny Manziel.
But Hoyer didn't give up. Instead he used Manziel as an inspiration to strive harder and surpassed grueling rehab and was able to get back on the field sooner than expected. He knows what he wants and he was focused I getting it. He did not think of Manziel or the trading rumors rather he kept himself motivated all the way.
Because of this Hoyer will be leading his hometown team onto the field for the Sept. 7 opener against their sworn rival Pittsburgh Steelers.
Hoyer said "Obviously it's very special for me. Did I believe this could happen after I got hurt? There was no doubt in my mind, but there were days when rehab (stunk) and I hated what I was doing. It's amazing how you appreciate the game when it's taken away from you."
Coach Mike Pettine chose Hoyer over Manziel stating that Manziel didn't do well enough during training camp or the two preseason games. He said that Manziel didn't convince him and the coaching staff.
Manziel said "It's obviously disappointing. I feel like if I would have come out and played better it would have been a different outcome. I don't think I played terrible, but I didn't do anything to jump off the page. I made strides and got better throughout training camp and that's what I wanted to do."
This was Pettines' first major decision making and it was a tough one. When asked whether will have a chance in playing this season, he answered "Give me a crystal ball, and I'll tell you."
He added "The NFL season is so long, so much can happen. We don't want Brian looking over his shoulder thinking one bad throw and I'm out. But over time, if you feel you have to make a change, time will only tell. You could foresee a scenario where he doesn't play this year and there are other scenarios that are absolutely possible as well. It's hard to tell."
