The "Pet Sematary" movie remake is already underway; however, there were rumored changes to be made on the reboot, and one of them was transforming Ellie's character from a little boy to a teenager.
David Kajganich divulged the info when he chatted with Lija's Library, Stephen King's fan site, in 2010, as reported by Screenrant. Back then, Paramount pictures had tasked the screenwriter to work on the scripts of the movie remake of King's two popular novels "It" and "Pet Sematary."
Kajganich said that after submitting his first draft, the film outfit underwent a complete management revamp. Thus, he coordinated with a new executive whose creative suggestions were not to his liking.
According to him, the firm intended to please the younger viewers. Hence, there were discussions about certain changes, and among them was transforming Ellie from little boy to teenager.
Eventually, Kajganich was released from the project, and the remake was frozen for years. Recently, the project has resumed and the scriptwriting task is now in Jeff Buhler's hands, reported Dead Central. Paramount has tapped him to collaborate with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the director of the "Pet Sematary" movie remake.
Buhler said that Paramount had a script from Matt Greenburg. He came on board to pen the changes after Fresnadillo took on the directorial position and requested some alterations in it. He and Fresnadillo put their heads together and came up with a new outline for the "Pet Sematary" movie remake, which Paramount accepted.
Working on the script, Buhler told Dead Central that they are penning the changes with complete respect for King's original plot. In addition, he stressed out that they are including new elements, not present in the two predecessors.
Overall, they wanted to deliver a story that is directly in touch with the plot's core. Thus, their focus stays on the gravity of loss and grief, and the harrowing desperation that drives people to make bad decisions.
