Ice Bucket Challenge To Raise ALS Awareness Takes Ugly Turn

At least two firefighters were seriously injured about noon on Thursday during a student fundraising event at Campbellsville University, according to the website Kentucky.com.

Taylor Country Judge-Executive Eddie Rogers said that details still remain unclear.

"We really don't know the details right now, but there were two firemen that were injured. They were at the university and they got into a (power) line. That's about the extent I can tell you at this point," Rogers told the Herald-Leader.

Campbellsville University President Michael Carter told WHAS-TV that the school asked the local fire department to help spray its marking band with cold water for the very popular ice bucket challenge that's been circulating as of late.

Carter also reportedly stated that at least two, and perhaps three, firefighters were injured, according to the Seattle PI.

Andrew Melnykovich, a spokesman for the Public Service Commission, says the fire truck's ladder either touched a power line or came too close to it. Melnykovich reportedly stated that the ladder didn't have to strike the line to cause a reaction.

The ice bucket challenge attempt was used as a way to raise awareness for ALS.

"No CU students have been injured. Reports say two firefighters were, however. Please keep them & their families in your thoughts and prayers," tweeted the university.

Carter issued a statement, stating, "We express heartfelt sympathy and prayers for the families of the two firefighters who were injured."
