Windows 9 release date to be announced next month? Sources report Microsoft's next OS will unveil on September 30.
The Windows 9 release date is much-anticipated, following reports that a Windows 9 beta is set to be released as a technical preview. Microsoft has yet to confirm dates and releases, but enough information has leaked to start a clamor.
Previous reports confirm the new Windows 9 is an ongoing project, and released screenshots of the desktop reveal a return to familiar features. One of the welcome comebacks supposedly expected in Windows 9 is the Start button and menu at the corner of the screen, with easy-launch access to programs.
Metro-Style windows for apps are also visible in the screenshot preview. In line with Microsoft's push towards touch support, Windows 9 will work on touch and non-touch devices, on desktops, laptops, and mobile.
The new OS is introduced as Threshold, but insiders believe the Windows 9 release date comes with Microsoft keeping in tradition, retaining the numbered version.
The rumored technical preview is expected to come with plenty of issues, and users who choose to try it out are expected to consent to automatic updates after installation. Microsoft has a history of "soft" releases, and is expected to follow the technical preview with a public preview, prior to the official launch.
It is also reported that the Cortana digital assistant will be part of the new OS, but it's unlikely the beta will offer a sample of this. Aside from Windows 9, the buzz is that Microsoft will release a separate version of Windows, integrating the Windows Phone and RT OS.
Announcement for the Windows 9 release date would be strategic if the September 30 reveal is confirmed, considering Apple has plans to release its next wave of devices and OS next month (extremetech.com).
