Anderson Silva's comeback update reveals that "The Spider" still holds the number one spot at the UFC's middleweight rankings. Meanwhile, Nick Diaz may be offered a title shot if he defeats the former Pound-For-Pound MMA king.
Anderson Silva's comeback to the UFC is scheduled for January 31, 2015 as UFC 183's main event bout, which will be held in Las Vegas. "The Spider" will be facing former Strikeforce champion and former UFC number one welterweight contender, Nick Diaz.
It will be the first time Silva will be fighting since the gruesome broke leg injury he sustained at UFC 168 in December 2013, against current middleweight champion Chris "All-American" Weidman.
Both men will be coming off long lay-offs as they face each other in what a number of fans deem as a "super fight." Anderson Silva has spent the last six months rehabilitating his broken leg, while Nick Diaz had been haggling with the UFC for a deal.
Anderson Silva's comeback fight was announced in late-July, to the surprise of MMA fans worldwide, including UFC President Dana White himself. The company executive is elated by the match-up, which he considers as "the fight that fans want to see."
"I'm pretty pumped for that fight," White said in an interview with MMA Junkie. "Anderson, I can't wait until he comes back. He's one of my favorite fighters. And you know Nick Diaz. He's exciting, and that's the fight Nick wanted. That's the fight the fans wanted to see. So we did it."
White also discussed the would-be repercussions of the bout's results on each fighter. The UFC executive noted that "The Spider" still sits atop the middleweight rankings, and Nick Diaz beating him would mean a huge boost in status for "MMA's Bad Boy."
"Anderson's ranked No. 1 in the world right now at 185," White said. "So obviously, Diaz, who is a 170-pounder, if he beats Anderson, it would be a pretty big statement for him."
"We'll see what the (title) landscape looks like when that fight happens," he added.
