National Zoo Panda Bao Bao Gets Instagram

The National Zoo in Washington is throwing a party for its panda cub Bao Bao, the second panda born at the zoo to survive her first birthday, according to the Seattle PI.

Bao Bao will be getting a cake made from frozen fruit juice and other treats, including pears and apples to celebrate the big 1.

Boa Boa, which means precious, has proven herself to be quite an adorable addition to the National Zoo where she enjoys sleeping in a tree. The 44-pound panda reportedly started eating solid food such as sweet potato and bamboo only recently.

The little cub is growing and learning rapidaly. Bao Bao is "getting really good" at responding when her name is called, according to panda keeper Nicole MacCorkle.

"She's really becoming an independent bear," MacCorkle said.

Bao Bao the panda already has a number of fans that come to the National Zoo to visit the cub. The National Zoo recently launched its Instagram account, featuring a selfie of Bao Bao on its account, according to USA Today.

Little Bao Bao will be experiencing quite a few changes next year. She'll stop drinking her mother's milk and will reportedly start living independently in her own enclosure. Keepers will also be teaching Bao Bao to present her paw to get blood drawn and lie down in order to get an ultrasound.

The National Zoo is one of only four zoos nationwide to have pandas, which are reportedly on loan from China. The zoo's current pandas, Bao Bao's mother and father, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, arrived back in 2000.
