Sergio Martinez's next fight will be dependent on his doctor's advice, as "Maravilla" is believed to be suffering from depression after his loss to Miguel Cotto.

"Maravilla" last saw action in June, wherein he put his three middleweight titles on the line. However, he lost all three titles in a unanimous decision defeat, while suffering three knockdowns in the fight's onset, and once more in the ninth round.

Since then, there have been no reports about Sergio Martinez's next fight. Recently, though, the fighter's advisor Sampson Lewkowicz revealed that the 39-year old fighter's return would be dependent on a medical appointment on September 16th.

"Sergio has an appointment on September 16th where he will be making a decision about his future as a professional prizefighter," Lewkowicz confirmed in a report by xnsports.com.

Prior to facing Miguel Cotto, "Maravilla" openly spoke about a nagging knee injury he was suffering from, adding that the fear of never being able to walk again bothered him greatly.

"At times, the fact that I wasn't going to make it did cross my mind," Martinez said in a May interview with Ringtv. "I feared I would never walk again. But I always wanted to return to the ring, at least for one last fight. But now, with the way I am seeing my recovery, my position has changed. I am in much better spirits. I changed 100 percent."

Lewkowicz also confirmed that "Maravilla" would also be seeking the help of knee and elbow surgeon Dr. Allen Answorth on the same date. But Martinez's advisor even revealed that his fighter is still not in tip-top shape, both physically and emotionally.

"He is at peace. But he is very depressed because he wants to come back and be his old self," Lewkowicz said about the news regarding Sergio Martinez's next fight. "After the fight, he felt very bad. As always, I was in the hospital with him after the fight, and he felt terrible because he felt it wasn't him who fought (Cotto) on that night, but rather his shadow."

"But anyone can have an off night, and we hope he'll have a chance to vindicate himself," he added.
