HBO and Paramount Television is reportedly in the process of making a prequel series based on the 2010 film "Shutter Island," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The cable network is reportedly in the early stages of developing the series. However, the website has confirmed that "Ashecliffe" will take place at the isolated mental hospital depicted in the thriller, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio.

For those who don't remember, "Shutter Island" was pushed out of the 2009 Oscar competition for an early 2010 release, but ended up becoming a box-office success for Paramount.

The prequel series to the drama is reportedly set to explore the hospital's past and "misdeeds" by its founders.

Dennis Lehane, who wrote the novel the film was based on, is writing the pilot for Martin Scorsese to direct, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Scorsese, Lehane, Brad Fischer, Appian Way's DiCaprio and Jennifer Killoran Davisson, feature co-writer Laeta Kalgridis, Rick Yorn, Chris Donnelly, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Mike Medavoy and Arnie Messer will serve as executive producers.

Martin Scorsese has previously worked with HBO.

"Boardwalk Empire," which the director executive produces, is set to come to an end this year. Scorsese is currently directing and producing an untitled pilot about the world of 1970s rock n'roll starring Bobby Cannavale, according to EW.
