Both films dealt with a near death experience of a leading female character. However, the identicalness of the theme of the two movies may just be more of a coincidence, than deliberate.

"The Fault In Our Stars" focused on a terminal illness producing an unforgettable love story . In "If I Stay" movie, the efforts made to make things work was the focus when a car accident changed the lives of the characters.
