Although at no comfort at all, Andy Murray still managed to win his first match at the US Opens. Murray faced Robin Haase during his first game and it was visible in his face that he was in pain after just two sets. Murray finished the match at 6-3, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 7-5 victory.
According to him "It's not the worst I have ever felt necessarily, but it's the worst I have ever felt after an hour and a half of a tennis match."
The match at Flushing Meadows was hot, literally. Murray had won the first two sets but right after that, that was when the issue started. Murray experience cramps all over his body, from his legs to right side and to his left side as well as cramps on his right arm and left arm. The pain was endless for Murray which was visibly showing pain.
He said "For me it was unexpected, and therefore quite difficult mentally to deal with. Sometimes it can happen in one area of your body, but when it starts to kind of go everywhere, you don't know exactly where it's going to creep up next. When you stretch one muscle, something else then cramps, too."
Murray said that had trained rigorously for the match and did not expect the cramps that troubled his game. He had even declared that it was the best prepared he had felt coming into a Grand Slam tournament since Wimbledon last year. He said "I got a great training block over in Miami done, so physically I'm where I would want to be. My body is pain-free, which is good."
On the other end of the court, Haase also felt a different sensation when he was playing against Murray. He said that he felt dizzy while playing with a foot injury.
He said "I was more busy with myself, and I was struggling myself. I tried to play my game, and it didn't bother me what he did or what he felt."
Both players really struggled during their first match at the US Opens and that it takes a lot of training and effort in order to surpass the challenge of the weather.
