The World Boxing Council (WBC) has mandated Miguel Cotto's next fight for May 2015. Trainer Freddie Roach, on the other hand, still wants his fighter to face Canelo Alvarez.
Miguel Cotto's next fight already has a shortlist of opponents, but WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has ordered for the newly crowned 160-pound champion to fight next year, with the victor of which to face the winner of the Gennady Golovkin vs. Marco Antonio Rubio fight on October 18.
"Miguel Cotto has an authorized major fight for May 2015, with the winner of that fighting against the winner of Golovkin versus Rubio," Sulaiman said in an interview with World Boxing News.
While no opponent has been named for Miguel Cotto's next fight, a number of top-level fighters have already surfaced as the potential challenger for the Puerto Rican boxer's title.
The most intriguing of which is former WBO welterweight champion Timothy "Desert Storm" Bradley, who last saw action against Manny Pacquiao in April. The Bradley camp has already welcomed the potential match-up, as confirmed by trainer Joel Diaz.
"They mentioned Miguel Cotto at one point and that was something that we considered," Diaz told HustleBoss.com. "I know Miguel Cotto is a tough fighter, he's a very strong fighter. I saw him against Martinez."
Diaz also dismissed the would-be disparity in weight, as Bradley fights at 147 pounds, while Cotto fights at 160 pounds.
"A lot of people don't understand that Miguel Cotto comes from 140 (pounds) as well," Diaz continued. "He's not a big fighter, (but) he is a strong fighter."
Meanwhile, Miguel Cotto's trainer Freddie Roach is still looking at another potential high-profile match-up, this time against former WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine light middleweight champion, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
"Right now with Cotto, we've got to fight Canelo Alvarez," Roach said. "He's making a lot of noise out there and selling a lot of tickets. You've got Peter Quillin out there [for Golovkin], and Daniel Jacobs."
"There's some top 10 guys out there, but he hasn't fought any of them yet," he continued. "In his last fight, he fought a good boxer, but he obviously couldn't punch that hard and was scared to death in round one."
