Latest LA Lakers news hint of more double teams and traps this season as the Purple and Gold lacks the rim protectors in the championship years. Coach Byron Scott insisted that the team needs a defensive identity that players can buy in.
According to LA Lakers news update provided by Mike Trudell for Lakers.com, newly hired head coach Byron Scott will employ three main defensive schemes against the pick-and-roll that can be adjusted and tweaked for different games.
"When I go into the season, there are three ways we're going to guard side pick and rolls, for example: we're going to down it, hard show, or red it (trap). If you do it from day one, guys get better at it because they're working on it every day in practice," he said.
During the championship run, the team had the triple towers Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom to protect the rim. Now, with the Carlos Boozer, Julius Randle and Jordan Hill at the helm, it's going to be more difficult to protect the paint.
"We can't force everything defensively to (Jordan) Hill or (Carlos) Boozer, so we'll focus more on forcing guys to certain places and corral them instead of trying to block shots. What I see during the first few days of practice will make an impact there, so we can have an identity on that end of the floor," he said.
That means more help coming the way of the ball, which signifies a lot of rotations and commitment so the ball handler will see one r two defenders every time.
Meanwhile, ForumBlueAndGold reported more LA Lakers news when it described coach Byron Scott's strategy as "sound." But it still depends on how much the players are buying into the system.
"The Lakers will need to be a help and recover team, corralling and walling off dribble penetrators with extra bodies and then making the extra rotations back to the perimeter to contest jumpers and/or run players off the three point line and into long two point jumpers. If that sounds like a lot of work, it's because it is," the website said.
