Is Daryl in "The Walking Dead" gay, or just misunderstood?

Producers are practically mum on the question of whether Daryl in "The Walking Dead" is gay, given that the character is so secretive ever since the first season, with only a reckless brother to offer for his past.

Daryl has been a mainstay in the AMC TV series since the first season, and one of the few last men standing from the original cast. There's news on the character's sexuality, though, actually reports that he is the show's first gay character, and a lead at that.

Fan speculation was only fueled with creator Robert Kirkman's sidestepping comments on the issue. At one point, he comments, "All I can say is that it's been discussed." It's a yes or no answer by all means.

Speculation on Daryl's sexual orientation is merited, and at the very least encouraged. The character's reclusive personality remains, and show-runner Scott Gimple comments on whether Daryl in "The Walking Dead" is gay , or not.

In a TV Line interview: "We're not holding back information on Daryl's sexuality as any sort of big reveal. The fact that there's still a question as to what Daryl's orientation is in Season 5 absolutely speaks to Daryl's character; he is a very guarded, very closed-off individual in a lot of ways."

Gimple went further and said questions on Daryl's sexual orientation won't be answered next season, but his continued cooperation with Rick's crew will force him to grow closer with co-characters, in effect "letting them see just who he is, in every way."

In line, but not directly related to the rumors that Daryl in "The Walking Dead" is gay, Gimple confirms the show will have a gay character in upcoming seasons, though declines to reveal if it's an existing character who'll come out or an introduction of a different character altogether (source: eonline.com).
