Fabricio Werdum believes Wanderlei Silva's drug test woes will not be a hindrance to "The Axe Murderer's" career, as the heavyweight contender believes his fellow Brazilian fighter has already established his mixed martial arts legacy.
Wanderlei Silva's drug test issues arose during the early half of the year after evading a test mandated by the Nevada Athletic Commission before his supposed showdown with retired UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen.
While "The Axe Murderer's" case is still pending a verdict, the fighter already admitted to using diuretics for a minor injury he sustained during the filming of the Ultimate Fighter Brazil in March.
But for heavyweight number one contender Fabricio Werdum, Wanderlei Silva's drug test woes will not be a career-killing issue.
"I think his reputation is going to stay intact," Werdum said in an interview with MMA Junkie. "He's done a lot for the sport, and throughout his career, he's moved the sport forward and he will always be remembered as a great champion."
Wanderlei Silva is a mixed martial arts veteran who holds one of the most illustrious careers in the sport. His "Axe Murderer" nickname came about due to the vicious beatings he has given his opponents throughout the years.
He currently holds a professional mixed martial arts record of 35-12, with 27 of those victories ending via knockout. He was also the former PRIDE FC middleweight champion, and holds the longest winning streak with the company, as he remained undefeated for four straight years.
These accolades alone was one of the reasons why Fabricio Werdum believes that Wanderlei Silva already has an established legacy in mixed martial arts, despite the drug test issues he is currently facing.
"If he wants to retire, he's done well for himself," Werdum said. "He's made good money for his kids and his future."
