He is one of the most celebrated actors of his generation, with his star making turns in television's Sherlock and as the villain Khan in Star Trek, and Smaug in The Hobbit movies. Benedict Cumberbatch is now even generating some serious Oscar buzz after his brilliant performance as the genius mathematician Alan Turing in the biopic entitled The Imitation Game.
Now wonder then that he was given recognition at the GQ Men of the Year Awards as its Actor of the Year. We've all long ago concluded that if you're Benedict Cumberbatch, everything you do will become viral on the Internet. Just look at his ALS ice bucket challenge. Now, even his acceptance speech accepting his award is being talked about and shared in various social media.
The actor had a little too much to drink at the GQ Men of the Year awards night, and he delivered a rambling, slightly incoherent speech where he started off thanking James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Tom Hardy, "for not being available" that night to be given that award.
He even chided himself for using outdated words like "motor drivers," and "rearing." Benedict Cumberbatch got even close to insulting Downton Abbey saying, it's like he was "auditioning for Downton Abbey or some such [expletive.] Not that Downton Abbey is [expletive]." Which was extra amusing, given that it was Dan Stevens, who played Matthew Crawley in the hit ITV drama, who presented him with the award!
The charming British actor then tried to recover his good manners, saying that he shouldn't be swearing too much for his mother was watching. In the end, by way of apology, Benedict Cumberbatch acknowledged that he shouldn't have drunk too much, and as an excuse he said he thought he would be first up off the stage because of "the list that was found on the tables."
