Marcos Maidana's next fight against Floyd Mayweather was done because it was what the fans wanted, according to "Money". However, "El Chino's" trainer Robert Garcia disagreed, saying that the current pound-for-pound boxing king had no other choice.
Marcos Maidana's next fight has now turned into a highly anticipated rematch against Floyd Mayweather. Their first encounter happened in May, with "Money" walking away with a majority decision verdict. The rematch will be taking place this Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Many clamored for Marcos Maidana's next fight to be against Floyd Mayweather for the second time, after "El Chino" was able to put enough pressure on "Money", and inflict significant enough damage. He was even able to open up a cut above Mayweather's right eye, which was a first for the undefeated fighter.
However, Floyd Mayweather claims that the agreement to do the rematch was mainly done for the fans, who have wanted for it to happen right after the first fight because of Maidana's performance.
"They like to see excitement," Mayweather told ESPN. "Why not do it again? Maidana is a hard worker who is coming to fight. My job is to be patient and smart and to entertain."
"El Chino's" trainer Robert Garcia, on the other hand, contradicted Mayweather's statements. The former world champion believes that the rematch was considered and agreed upon by the Mayweather camp because they were left with no other choice.
"I truly believe that he had no other options," Garcia said. "He was forced to give us a rematch. He was forced to fight Maidana. There were no other names out there that he could've fought in September that would make sense."
"A rematch with Maidana is the only fight that makes sense to sell pay-per-views to please the fans, and he had no other options," he reiterated. "That's what I think."
