Gmail Passwords Leaked: Almost 5 Million Accounts Compromised? There's 'No Evidence That Our Systems Have Been Compromised,' Google Responds

Rappler Philippines reported yesterday (September 11, 2012) that there were almost 4.93 million usernames and gmail passwords leaked. The news on the leaked personal info of massive Gmail users was published on a Russian Bitcoin forum on Wednesday, September 10.

Some reports said the Gmail passwords leak does not appear to be a massive security breach. Next Web reported that Google does not believe there's security breach happened. The exact statement from the company:

"no evidence that our systems have been compromised, but whenever we become aware that accounts may have been, we take steps to help those users secure their accounts."

Since the reported details were posted on a forum website, Lifehacker said the forum administrators also transffered passwords to a text file and made available by forum user tvskit, who claimed some 60% of the passwords still worked.

Follow-up news from Lifehacker, some users on Reddit have claimed the leak info appears to be passwords leaked from other websites and were associated to Gmail addresses. Currently, all of the comments on the Reddit post have been removed.

Rappler Ph suggested that it might be good for Gmail users using the same password for multiple accounts change and make passwords complex and unique to ensure security.
