With only two weeks leading to the Donald Cerrone vs. Eddie Alvarez fight, "Cowboy" is likely getting a title shot if he emerges victorious on his next fight. The lightweight contender, however, claims that he "doesn't give a sh*t."
The Donald Cerrone vs. Eddie Alvarez fight will be taking place at UFC 178 on September 28th, in the United States' fight capital, Las Vegas, Nevada. It will also be Alvarez's debut with the UFC, after being released from rival promotion Bellator FC.
Fight fans have anticipated "The Silent Assassin's" crossover to the UFC, and subsequently, the Donald Cerrone vs. Eddie Alvarez fight has garnered a huge buzz.
"Cowboy", on the other hand, has been on a four-fight win streak, and it is likely that he will get to face the winner of the Anthony Pettis-Gilbert Melendez fight in December, with the UFC lightweight strap on the line.
Cerrone, who has been an MMA veteran for eight years now, is fully aware of this situation.
"If I beat Eddie Alvarez, do I get a No. 1 contender spot? More than likely," Cerrone said in an interview with ESPN.com. "Especially if I finish Eddie, the UFC is probably going to give me a title shot."
"Cowboy" had been unsuccessful with his previous title runs back in the now defunct World Extreme Cagefighting organization (WEC), and fighting for the UFC title is definitely a monumental moment in his fighting career.
But when asked about this scenario, the 31-year old Denver, Colorado native had this to say:
"Is this a No. 1 contender fight? Yes. Will I wait for a title shot if I win? Probably not," Cerrone quipped. "Because I don't give a s---."
He did clarify his statement, adding that competing is solely in his mind.
"I'm going to fight [this month] and then I want to fight again December, January, February -- let's go," Cerrone added. "Bring them on."
