UN Goodwill Ambassador for Women Emma Watson said in her speech that Feminism is not man-hating. "For the record, feminism by definition is: 'The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes'."
In the launch of the HeForShe campaign in the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Harry Potter star extended her invitations to men and boys to become advocates for gender equality. She stressed, "Gender equality is your issue too."
According to World Health Organization, "Men need to be held accountable so that their actions and attitudes are examined also in the light of social and cultural norms, policies and practices, and not just biology. Norms, policies and practices can and do change". It also reiterated that, "Women and men need to work together for greater gender equality and not merely blame each other for the inequalities and inequities. This means that men's awareness needs to be raised concerning the causes and results of their attitudes and actions on the people in their lives for the benefit of all."
With Emma Watson talking about feminism and promoting gender equality, it is but appropriate to ask: Does gender inequality still exist today?
Since the first assembly for women's rights in the U.S. in 1848, so much has already changed. Feminism today has become different. Kimberley Reader wrote in The Independent: "Women can vote, get the same education as the boys and go to work with the big boys. Women can live their lives - dress, walk, talk, like, dislike, do and not do whatever, however, and whoever they please." Unfortunately, discrimination still stays and the statistics can prove this.
According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, 76% of workers in the 10 largest low-wage occupations are women. UN Women's "Facts and Figures: Ending Violence against Women" stated that "35 percent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence. However, some national violence studies show that up to 70 percent of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime from an intimate partner."
Emma Watson hopes that with her talk about feminism and U.N.'s call for gender equality, men will be able to realize that their participation in the HeForShe campaign is essential.
