Canelo Alvarez news reveals that the former light middleweight champion has left the Showtime network to sign a multi-fight deal with rival HBO Sports. The Guadalajara boxing sensation also promised to take the Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day dates from Floyd Mayweather, who usually schedules his fights around the said seasons.
Along with Oscar De La Hoya's truce with Top Rank Promotions and Bob Arum, Golden Boy Promotions has also gone back in good terms with television network HBO.
Canelo Alvarez news features a report by Bad Left Hook, stating that the 24-year old fighter will once again fight for HBO, which is recognized as the number one boxing network in the United States.
"For all of my career, I have wanted to fight on HBO for one main reason: I believe it will allow more of my fans to see me in action," Alvarez said. "Today marks a huge milestone for me, and I look forward to a long and successful partnership with HBO."
Rightfully so, HBO is ecstatic to have Alvarez back on their side, as they consider the young Mexican boxer as one of today's best in the sport.
"At only 24 years old, Canelo has already established himself as one of the boxing world's brightest stars, and we look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship as we embark on this new chapter together," said HBO Sports President Ken Hershman. "We are delighted to partner with Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions in presenting Canelo's fights and events on our various platforms."
Canelo Alvarez news also reveals the former light middleweight champion's intentions to take the Mexican dates from Floyd Mayweather and have it attached to his name as well. Mayweather usually fights during "Cinco de Mayo" weekend, and the Mexican Independence Day in the second weekend of September.
"Obviously, those two dates are very important," Alvarez told RingTV. "They're Mexican dates. I want to recoup that. I want to recuperate those dates and take them back to the Mexican people."
