Ello was created in 2013 as private social network, presently opened its invitation-only basis. Due to the strong demand but limited supply, the invitations have been selling on eBay at $500. Ello is making at least 3,500 invitation requests pero hour as an outcome of a viral surge in the previous week.
Ello seems to targets the frustrated Facebook users, appears to have caught on with simple message.
The company explained, "Ello doesn't sell ads. Nor do we sell data about you to third parties. We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce, and manipulate -- but a place to connect, create, and celebrate life. You are not a product. Under the guise of offering a 'free' service, users pay a high price in intrusive advertising and lack of privacy."
The company rule said that the procedure of selling and collecting mapping your social connections and personal data for profit is both unethical and creepy.
Ello was introduced by a group of programmers and artists, based in Vermont managed by Paul Budnitz, who is an experienced in designing robots and bicycles. He created Ello as ad-free, simple and beautiful.
According to social media researcher, Nathan Jurgenson, "I love these moments of new social media when conversation explodes, moved to imagine how social media can be different, questioning core assumptions instead of just fretting and complaining -- all before this paint even dries."
"Ello is getting so much attention precisely because it promises social media of a different politics. We've collectively come to the realization that the rise of social media has been accompanied by handing far too much power to far too few people, and there's energy to shake things up, even if just a bit," Jurgenson added.
Ello comes along in the middle of the different issues against Facebook, as the world's largest social network started to disable accounts to use real names instead of stage names.
