Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has been charged with drunken driving and speeding in Maryland on early Tuesday, according to the website thestar.com.
A Maryland Transportation Authority officer saw Phelps going 84mph in a 45-ph zone and crossing double lane lines inside the Ft. McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore, police said in a statement, according to the L.A. Times. The Olympic medalist was cooperative, but "unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests," according to the statement.
The winner of 18 Olympic gold medals was later released after his arrest at about 1:40 a.m., according to CNN.
This isn't the first time Michael Phelps has gotten in trouble with the law.
The swimmer was reportedly sentenced to 18 months of probation after pleading guilty to drunken driving in Maryland back in 2004.
"I made a mistake. I'm sorry," Phelps had stated in a news conference a decade ago.
Phelps also made headlines in 2009 after photos of him allegedly inhaling from a marijuana pipe surfaced.
"I'll make a million mistakes in my life, but as long as I never make the same mistake again, then I've been able to learn and grow," Phelps told CNN back in 2012.
Phelps lost one of his sponsors, USA Swimming, and an endorsement deal with Kellogg Co. after the alleged bong incident.
In the midst of his new legal drama, Michael Phelps is currently on the road back from retirement and is reportedly expected to try for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
