It was Benedict Cumberbatch who played the role of Stephen Hawking most recently, but it is Les Miserables actor Eddie Redmayne that is generating all the buzz for portraying the scientist. And watching the brand new The Theory of Everything trailer, we can say that the hype is well deserved.
The movie based on the memoir written by Stephen Hawking's ex wife Jane Hawking, entitled "Travelling to Infinity: My Life With Stephen." The movie follows Jane's remarkable relationship with Stephen, which started when they met in Cambridge University some time in the 1960s. Jane was Stephen's younger sister's friend, and they fell in love just before the scientist was diagnosed with the disease that has confined him to his wheelchair.
The movie focuses on the years of sacrifice and challenges that ensued, mostly stemming from the scientist's struggles with his rare motor neuron disease. The Theory of Everything also chronicles the success that Stephen enjoyed, following his well renowned theories about time and his research on quantum physics. The Theory of Everything trailer, which is accompanied by the song "Heavenfaced," from indie band The National, does a fantastic job of enticing would be moviegoers to see the film, with its focus on the love shared between Jane and Stephen, which they held onto against all odds.
In the clip, Jane is shown standing by her man even when people tried to dissuade her from marrying Stephen. "But I love him and he loves me," Jane says. The Theory of Everything trailer shows the couple getting married in the courtyard, with Jane vowing, "We are going to fight this illness together."
Hawking himself is to be credited for much of his success and resilience. He is shown in The Theory of Everything trailer displaying a very hopeful attitude despite the challenges he is enduring. "There should be no boundary to human endeavour. However bad life may seem, while there is life, there's hope," Stephen declares.
Eddie Redmayne is joined by British actress Fellicity Jones who stars as Jane Hawking, Charlie Cox, Emily Watson, Simon Mc Burney and David Thewlis. The movie had its premiere at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival.
