Michael Phelps DUI Earns Him Suspension From U.S. Swimming: 'I Need To Focus On Me As An Individual And Learn From Experience”
According to major news portals, Olympic swimmer has suspended from the U.S. swimming team and he will sit out from the World Championships next year. Phelps is the most decorated Olympian on the team. One major news agency said that Phelps had violated the code of conduct of the U.S. swimming team and is removed from the team for six months, taking away a chance to compete until April 6, 2015. Phelps will sit out of competitions in Kazan, Russia, a preparation for the Rio Olympics de Jeineiro.
Phelps had recently returned to U.S. swimming after a 2-year hiatus was suspended on DUI, when the police found him with a breath analyzer reading of 0.14, twice the limit. His drinking and driving episode occurred a couple of days after he was going to start a treatment program with the U.S. swimming team.
In late September, Phelps was also caught speeding and zigzagging through double lanes at the Fort McHenry Tunnel on I-95 in Baltimore, according to a statement by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police. The police said that Michael was travelling at 84 miles/per hour at a 45 mph marked area.
USA Today reports, Phelps made history with “22 medals from the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympics. He retired after the London Games, where he won four golds, but began training last fall and officially returned to competition in April.”
After joining the U.S. team after retirement, Phelps won three golds and two silvers at the Pan Pacific Championships.
A disappointed Phelps was quoted as saying by USA Today, “"Swimming is a major part of my life, but right now I need to focus my attention on me as an individual, and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future."
This is not the Olympian’s first DUI booking. He was caught drunk driving in 2004, when he was 19.
