America's biggest club slammed "American Horror Story: Freak Show" for contributing to the "clown fear" as one of the characters, Twisty the Clown, is depicted as a murderous and perverse individual.
The medical term is coulrophobia, which is described as an extreme fear of clowns. It's a new terminology, perhaps coined in the 80s. "Scientists and doctors now agree that it is a result of not knowing who lies behind the excessive makeup, red nose and hair color," said this website.
But Glenn Kohlberger, president of Clowns of America International, slammed "American Horror Story: Freak Show" for promoting fear of clowns.
"Hollywood makes money sensationalizing the norm. They can take any situation no matter how good or pure and turn it into a nightmare," he told The Hollywood Reporter.
He said being a clown is a dying breed as evidenced by the declining population of the organization, from 3,500 back a decade ago to just 2,500 today. The median age is also quite old, which means young people don't really like joining the group.
"We do not support in any way, shape or form any medium that sensationalizes or adds to coulrophobia or 'clown fear,' " Kohlberger says.
Meanwhile, UT San Diego said that while "American Horror Story: Freak Show" promotes clown fear, this is not the first where murderous clowns are depicted in pop culture.
"Who can forget Pennywise the Dancing Clown from Stephen King's 'It?'" the website said.
It also said that there was John Wayne Gacy, a real life serial killer in the 1970s who dressed himself as "Pogo the Clown" to lure boys to his home to rape and kill them.
"One thing's for sure, Clowns of America International was right when they said that Twisty is one scary clown. It seems he has many people sleeping with the lights on," said the site.
